The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) has joined several government agencies in conducting a community awareness campaign at Alabama Community Hall to educate residents on responsible gambling, consumer rights, alcohol use, environmental protection and data privacy.
The campaign, held under the Thuntsha Lerole Accelerated Service Delivery Programme, brought together the NWGB, North West Liquor Board, Consumer Affairs Unit, Environment Unit and Information Regulator to provide residents with essential information on public safety, consumer protection and responsible behavior.
During the campaign, the NWGB emphasized the importance of responsible gambling, reminding residents that gambling should be treated as a form of entertainment rather than a source of income. Community members were also encouraged to report illegal gambling operators and seek free treatment and counseling through the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) on 0800 006 008.
The Consumer Affairs Unit educated residents on their rights to fair marketing, honest business practices, quality and safe products, and fair value for money. Meanwhile, the North West Liquor Board promoted responsible alcohol consumption and encouraged residents to support licensed liquor outlets.
Environmental awareness also formed part of the initiative through the “My Tree, My Oxygen” campaign, which encouraged residents to plant and protect trees to support environmental sustainability and a greener community. In addition, the Information Regulator highlighted the importance of safeguarding personal information in accordance with South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
The joint awareness campaign demonstrated the participating government agencies commitment to strengthening public awareness, protecting consumers and empowering communities through coordinated service delivery. Through initiatives such as the Thuntsha Lerole Accelerated Service Delivery Programme, the agencies aim to improve access to essential information and promote responsible practices that contribute to safer, better-informed communities.
