A family in Jalingo, Taraba State, has appealed to sports betting companies to suspend or permanently close the betting accounts of a young man, Paul Matudi, over concerns about his alleged excessive gambling. The appeal was contained in a letter dated October 30 and addressed to the management of betting companies operating in Jalingo and Ardo-Kola Local Government Areas of the state.
The letter, signed by Abraham Matudi, who identified himself as the family’s representative, urged operators to immediately suspend, freeze or permanently block Paul Matudi’s betting accounts to prevent further gambling activities. According to the family, his involvement in sports betting has become excessive and is affecting his education, finances and the emotional well-being of relatives.
“The situation is affecting Paul’s ability to concentrate on his education and exercise control over his betting activities,” the family stated in the letter.
The family also called on betting operators to strengthen responsible gambling measures, particularly when dealing with customers suspected of being underage or showing signs of compulsive gambling. It further stated that it would not accept responsibility for financial losses or other consequences arising from betting activities conducted through the accounts after the formal closure request had been submitted.
Abraham Matudi also urged the companies that receive the letter to circulate it among other betting operators and outlets across the two local government areas to ensure the request reaches all relevant platforms. The family said it expected the operators to cooperate and provide confirmation once the accounts had been disabled.
The appeal highlights concerns about the potential effects of excessive sports betting on young Nigerians, including its implications for education, financial stability and family relationships. It also draws attention to the role of betting operators in enforcing age restrictions and responsible gambling safeguards.
