Mobile money transactions in Ghana reached GH¢518.8 billion in August 2026, reflecting continued growth in the country’s digital payments ecosystem.
According to the Bank of Ghana’s September 2026 Summary of Economic and Financial Data, the value of mobile money transactions increased from GH¢509.4 billion in July and was 46.5% higher than the GH¢354.1 billion recorded in August 2025.
Transaction volumes also rose during the month, reaching 1.046 billion transactions, compared with 969 million in July. The growth came despite a significant gap between registered and active mobile money accounts. Ghana recorded 85.8 million registered accounts as of August, while 26.4 million were active.
The Bank of Ghana defines an active mobile money account as one that has recorded at least one transaction within the previous 90 days. As a result, the difference between registered and active accounts does not necessarily indicate that the remaining accounts are permanently unused but may reflect varying levels of customer activity.
The mobile money agent network also expanded in August. Active agents increased from 550,000 in July to 594,000, providing customers with more access points for services such as cash deposits and withdrawals.
Meanwhile, mobile money float rose from GH¢39 billion in July to GH¢39.8 billion in August, representing the funds held within the mobile money system. The latest figures highlight the continued expansion of mobile money as a key channel for digital payments and financial transactions in Ghana.
