The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) joined women in law enforcement and compliance from various stakeholders across the North West Province to lead a multidisciplinary compliance inspection operation in Vryburg as part of Women’s Month commemorations.
The inspections were conducted at various outlets within the Naledi Local Municipality and focused on educating business owners about the dangers and consequences of non-compliance. The operation also highlighted how violations of the law can negatively affect businesses, livelihoods and their future operations.
The NWGB formed part of the multidisciplinary compliance operation led by the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) through its Liquor, Consumer and Tourism departments. The operation was conducted in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality and Naledi Local Municipality Traffic Officers.
The multidisciplinary team inspected liquor, grocery and gambling outlets to verify compliance with relevant legislation and identify potential violations. During the operation, NWGB inspectors identified two illegal gambling operations operating from internet cafés. Both operators were each fined R2,500 for operating illegally.
The first internet café was found operating with 44 computers, while the second had 50 computers and 43 illegal gambling machines. The findings highlight the importance of compliance within the gambling sector and the risks associated with operating gambling businesses without the required licenses and approvals.
The North West Gambling Board urges members of the public to gamble only at licensed gambling premises. Gambling at an illegal gambling operation is unlawful, and gamblers should be aware that the law does not provide the same protection at illegal gambling establishments.
The Board also encourages members of the public to report suspected illegal gambling activities to help authorities strengthen enforcement and protect communities from unlawful gambling operations.
The compliance operation demonstrates the continued commitment of law enforcement and regulatory stakeholders to promoting lawful business practices, protecting communities and ensuring compliance with applicable legislation across the North West Province.
