NWGB Raises Gambling Awareness Among North-West University Students

The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) has urged students at North-West University (NWU) to make responsible choices and prioritize their education over gambling during a Student Wellness Awareness Event held at the university’s Mahikeng Campus on 8 October 2026.

Held under the theme “Healthy Choices, Healthy Futures,” the event provided a platform to address issues affecting students well-being and academic performance, including mental health, substance use, relationships, sexual and reproductive health, psychosocial challenges and addiction.

During the event, Student Wellness Coordinator Pan Mabille highlighted the university’s efforts to support students experiencing financial and personal difficulties. Approximately 500 students currently receive assistance with essential items, including sanitary towels, food and personal care products, although the demand for support remains significantly higher.

The NWGB used the engagement to remind students that funding provided through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) represents an investment in their education and future. Students were encouraged to protect their funding, remain focused on their studies and avoid gambling activities that could jeopardize their academic progress and financial stability.

The South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) also participated in the awareness campaign, providing information on support services available to individuals experiencing gambling-related difficulties. These services include counselling, treatment, self-exclusion and gambling account-banning options.

The initiative highlighted the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and responsible gambling organizations in promoting student well-being, preventing gambling-related harm and helping young people make informed decisions.

Through the engagement, the NWGB reinforced its message that students should safeguard their educational opportunities and make choices that support a healthier and more secure future.
