NWGB Strengthens Law Enforcement Partnerships to Crack Down on Illegal Gambling

The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) has strengthened its collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) through a training and knowledge-sharing session focused on enhancing cooperation across the criminal justice system.

The session covered key areas, including the 48-hour rule and non-enrollment of matters, the investigation and seizure of evidence in cybercrime cases, and the application of racketeering provisions in addressing organized criminal activities.

A key highlight was a presentation by Mr Simon Mogapi on gambling-related crimes, which underscored the growing impact of illegal gambling in the North West province.

The NWGB noted that illegal gambling extends beyond regulatory violations, as it can facilitate money laundering, organized crime, financial losses and other social harms while depriving the public of the protections provided by licensed gambling operators.

The NWGB emphasized the importance of continued cooperation with SAPS and the NPA to ensure that illegal gambling cases are effectively investigated, prosecuted and disrupted.

The Board welcomed the progress achieved through previous joint operations and engagements and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with law enforcement and prosecuting authorities to combat illegal gambling and related criminal activities.
