The SunBet Cares Bursary Programme has provided financial support to 34 North-West University (NWU) students as part of an initiative aimed at expanding access to education in South Africa’s North West Province.

The bursary launch and handover ceremony was held at NWU’s Potchefstroom Campus, with the North West Gambling Board (NWGB) participating in the event alongside SunBet, Fundi and the Department of Education.

Through the programme, 34 students received financial assistance to support their studies, covering costs including tuition, accommodation, study materials and living expenses.

The initiative reflects a collaborative effort between government, the gambling industry and educational institutions to create opportunities for young people and support their academic development.

Speaking at the event, NWGB Acting CEO Boitumelo Qalinge congratulated the bursary recipients and encouraged them to make full use of the opportunity.

“This opportunity is not only an investment in your education, but in your families, communities and the future of our country. Study hard, remain focused and, when you succeed, pay it forward by creating opportunities for others,” Qalinge said.

The NWGB said that, as the gambling industry regulator in the province, it remains committed to ensuring that gambling activities are conducted in a safe, fair, responsible and regulated environment. The Board also acknowledged the role licensed gambling operators can play in supporting communities through initiatives focused on education and empowerment.

The SunBet Cares Bursary Programme highlights the potential for collaboration between industry stakeholders and educational institutions to provide financial assistance and improve opportunities for students pursuing higher education.

The NWGB congratulated SunBet, Fundi and North-West University on the initiative and reaffirmed its support for programmes that contribute to education, empowerment and positive development in the North West Province.
