The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) has concluded its Back-to-Basics Workshop, an initiative aimed at strengthening the investigation and prosecution of illegal gambling activities in South Africa’s North West province.
The workshop brought together officials from the NWGB, South African Police Service (SAPS) and National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to enhance their understanding of gambling legislation and the legal procedures required to build successful cases against illegal gambling operators.
Key areas covered included evidence handling, lawful searches and seizures, arrests, and prosecution requirements. Discussions also examined how procedural errors, insufficient evidence and weaknesses in case dockets can undermine prosecutions.
The workshop highlighted the growing complexity of illegal gambling enforcement amid developments associated with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including the expansion of online gambling platforms and the use of counterfeit gambling licenses.
Participants emphasized the importance of strengthening investigative capacity and improving cooperation among regulatory, law enforcement and prosecuting authorities to address these challenges effectively.
Under the leadership of Acting CEO Boitumelo Qalinge, the NWGB reaffirmed its commitment to combating illegal gambling, promoting compliance with gambling legislation and protecting the public.
The board also highlighted the importance of safeguarding provincial revenue generated by the regulated gambling industry, noting that effective enforcement and inter-agency collaboration are essential to maintaining a transparent and accountable regulatory environment.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve the handling of illegal gambling cases and strengthen enforcement of gambling laws in the province.
