Beyond Sports Betting: Africa's Prediction Market Opportunity

The rise of prediction market is no longer a theoretical discussion -it is a commercial reality. No company illustrates this better than Kalshi, currently the largest regulated prediction market operation in the United States. What began as a niche forecasting platform has rapidly evolved into one of the most valuable businesses in the emerging prediction economy.

According to Sacra, Kalshi generated between $260 million and $264 million in revenue during 2025 from approximately $23 billion in trading volume. The growth trajectory has been even more remarkable in 2026, with annualized revenue run-rate estimates exceeding $1.5 billion, driven largely by surging demand for sports, political, economic and event- based contracts.

Investors have noticed.  Kalshi’s valuation reportedly climbed from less than $1 billion before 2025 to approximately $11 billion in 2025 according to Forbes. Recent fundraising rounds have pushed that figure to an estimated $22 billion, underscoring investor confidence in the sector’s long-term potential.

Meanwhile, Polymarket has pursued a different playbook. Rather than focusing on immediate monetization, the platform prioritized liquidity, market depth and user acquisition. According to Sacra, Polymarket generated little or no direct trading revenue during its early growth phase, choosing instead to build scale and engagement. The strategy paid off.

Data from Polysyncer estimates lifetime trading volume between $8 billion and $12billion, fueled significantly by activity surrounding the 2024 U.S election cycle. With broader fee structures introduced in 2026, independent estimates from PolyRevenue suggest poly-market’s annual revenue potential now ranges between $200 million and 250 million.

Together, these figures reveal a powerful reality: prediction markets are no longer an experimental niche. They are rapidly becoming a multi-billion-dollar industry where information itself has become a tradable asset.

The Value of Prediction Market

Prediction markets create value far beyond gambling. At their corer, they are information markets that convert collective opinion into actionable forecasts. Their greatest strength lies in aggregating the knowledge, insights and expectations of thousands of participants into a single market price.

Prediction markets monetize that asset by allowing participants to buy, sell and price probabilities un real time. That is why many investors see prediction markets not as the next betting product but as the next evolution of digital finance, forecasting and intelligence.

What This Mean for Africa

The most significant lesson is not the revenue itself but the speed of growth. Prediction markets have moved from a niche concept to platforms processing tens of billions of dollars in trades. Combined trading volume across major operators has already reached tens of billions of dollars annually. For African investors, the implication is clear:

  1. sport books monetize sporting events
  2. Prediction markets monetize information itself.

Every election, football transfer, inflation announcement, commodity price movement, entertainment award and business decision can become a market. That is why many venture capital firms now view prediction, markets not merely as a gambling product but as a new asset class sitting between gaming, fin-tech, trading and data intelligence.

If Africa eventually embraces regulated prediction markets, the continent could be participating in one of the fastest-growing segments of the global digital wagering and forecasting economy.
